Capitol, a city in the interior of Minas Gerais, has gained tourist evidence in recent years thanks to its waterfalls and canyons formed by one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, the Furnas Lake.

Surrounded by exuberant nature, the region is ideal for those who enjoy hiking and do not need a refreshing bath in one of the many natural pools and waterfalls. In addition, the destination is also sought after by lovers of adventure sports.

Lost paradise

One of the most famous tourist attractions in the region, Paraíso Perdido is a complex of streams, waterfalls and natural pools, which is located in the municipality of São João Batista do Glória, 40 km from Capitólio. It is possible to make a trail, finding on the way several rapids and small lakes with small fish, until reaching the last waterfall.

The place is inviting for a bath in its crystal clear waters or for the practice of sports such as zip lining, abseiling or trekking. Paraíso Perdido is structured with space for camping, barbecue and restaurant.

How to get: take the M-050 road towards Capitólio – Passos. Passing the junction at the entrance to Usina de Furnas, continue for another 2.5 km. Access to Paraíso Perdido is on the right side of the road. Admission: R$ 40 (cash only).

Blue Lagoon Quarry

One of the must-see attractions in Capitólio is an old quarry for exploration and extraction of quartz, which has been deactivated. There, a lagoon with clear blue waters was formed, with an admirable view in the midst of the canyons. Pedreira has difficult access, so it is recommended to hire 4×4 tours at the city's tourist agencies.

How to get: along the MG-050 highway towards Capitólio – Passos. When passing by Mirante dos Cânions and Cascata Eco Parque (on the left), follow a few meters and enter the first dirt road that appears on the right. Access is not signposted, so stay tuned. Free entrance.

Eco Park Waterfall

Complex of several waterfalls and natural pools. Visitors access the site after a trail of approximately 15 minutes and it takes almost two hours to get to know the entire place, which draws attention for the beauty of the waterfalls. In the upper part of the canyons it is possible to see the dam and the boats on the river. There is also a restaurant and camping area on site.

How to get: In the direction of Capitólio – Passos, it is after Mirante dos Cânions, also on the left. The park is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm. Input: R$ 40.

Navigating through Lake Furnas, also known as “Mar de Minas”, is certainly an essential tour in Capitólio. The tour can be done by boat, schooner or catamaran with a fascinating view of caves, natural pools and several waterfalls between the great canyons.

The tours can vary in route and also in duration (generally between 2h and 4h), but practically all of them make stops at Vale dos Tucanos, Cascatinha, Canyon de Furnas and Lagoa Azul, when it is possible to enjoy the place a little more and take the opportunity to cool off in the waters of Lake Furnas.

How to get: Tours depart from Ponta do Turvo or Escarpas do Lago and cost, on average, R$ 70 per person, depending on the season and duration of the tour.

Sun Trail

The Sun Trail is located in an area inside an inn of the same name. The circuit, which is about 3 km long, is followed by guides, leading to three waterfalls: Cachoeira No Limite, Cachoeira do Grito and Cachoeira do Poço Dourado. The latter has rocks decorated with small stone totem sculptures left by visitors, as local legend says that if you stack at least three stones and make a wish to nature, the same will come true.

After the trail, you can enjoy the rest of the day at the inn, which has a restaurant, swimming pool, hammocks and areas for rappelling.

How to get: The Sun Trail is approximately 25 km from the center of Capitólio. Take the road towards Capitólio – Passos. Access is on the right. The park is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 5 pm. Input: R$ 45.

Viewpoint of the Canyons

Definitely the most sought after attraction in the Capitol. The landscape is breathtaking and makes for beautiful photos: huge 20-meter high walls and, in the background, the beautiful Furnas Lake and everything around it.

How to get:  the viewpoint is located 30 km from the center of Capitólio, towards Passos. Access is via the shoulder of the MG-050 highway between km 312 and 313. After a small trail it is possible to have a panoramic view of the place, which is open every day from 7:30 am to 5 pm.

Grotão waterfall

The place is a little more isolated, so it doesn't receive as many tourists. The waterfall is high, surrounded by native forest and the well is not deep, suitable for bathing. The space also has a hammock.

How to get: Access is via the shoulder of the MG-050 highway, signposted on the right towards Capitólio-Turvo, following a dirt road for about 7 km until the entrance to the waterfall, where you can park. The place is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm. Input: R$15. Children up to 7 years old do not pay.

Diquadinha Waterfall

With a shallow well of transparent water and several waterfalls, the Diquadinha waterfall is a great option for a quick and peaceful walk. Access is via an easy level trail, approximately 10 minutes' walk.

How to get: The waterfall is close to the viewpoint of the Furnas lake canyons, just cross the track. Free entrance.

It is one of the most sumptuous waterfalls in Capitólio and one of the most famous stops on boat trips on Lake Furnas. Its fall flows through the imposing canyons that surround the place, flowing into its greenish waters.

How to get: access can be made only by boat or by rappelling on its walls.
