After easing the isolation caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19), Greece reopens the Acropolis of Athens, museums and other tourist attractions in the country
After being closed to the public for two months due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, the Acropolis of Athens has reopened its doors to visitors again. The country also announced that it has reopened another 200 open-air archaeological sites.
The monument's reopening ceremony was led by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
The Acropolis of Athens held about 2,000 people, but with the new health measures, only a limited number of visitors are allowed to visit the attraction, enforcing social distancing rules.
Large groups with guides are not being admitted and visitors are strongly advised to wear masks.
The Acropolis is one of the most important ancient sites in the world and is visible from almost everywhere in the city of Athens. The Greek ruins became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
While the Acropolis is open again, Greek museums will only reopen until June 15th.
The country's authorities are anxious for its tourism economy to be restored, as the IMF has warned that Greece is likely to be the EU country most affected by the economic fallout from the pandemic.
Greece was one of the fastest countries to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, with 2,882 cases and 172 deaths to date (25/05).
Acropolis of Athens
The Acropolis of Athens is in fact the most famous attraction in Greece. Situated in the highest area of the city, the architectural complex served as a military fort, political center and religious sanctuary in Athens.
The acropolis was built around 450 BC and contains some of Greece's best-known monuments, such as the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike.
