Avianca announced that it has changed its business model to have low-cost seating options on aircraft. With this, the company believes that it will reach all types of passengers. However, for these changes to take place, in the coming months, the Colombian company will increase the number of seats on the planes by 20%.
After emerging from a judicial recovery, which lasted 18 months, Avianca wants to reconfigure its aircraft so that the economy class starts to offer services low cost for your customers. However, for this, the company had to make some internal changes to the aircraft, such as the impossibility of reclining the seats and reducing the space between them.
Operation and aircraft
The planes used by Avianca will be replaced. This will reduce the company's expenses with aircraft maintenance. In addition, the company will stop operating with the Airbus A319 and Airbus A330 models and will mainly operate with Airbus A320 and Boeing 787.
For the cabin, the passenger can choose three classes: economy, cheaper, where the seats will be fixed and with built-in headrests; plus, intermediate, with reclining seats and headrest adjustment; and the premium, more expensive, with more space and a center seat transformed into a console.
Another planned change is an increase in the number of direct flights made by the company. Since the main airport that receives the connections, in Bogota, is saturated. By the end of the process, in 2023, the company expects to go from the current 100 aircraft and 110 routes to 120 aircraft and more than 200 routes. For 2025, the expectation is that ticket prices will drop by up to 30%.
Adrian Neuhauser, CEO of the company, stated that the company has no intention of becoming low cost, but wants to offer the same service as these companies: “We will have all the advantages of mileage and partnerships, in addition to greater frequency of flights. But, we will also focus on increasing operational efficiency to lower prices and offer personalized services,” said Neuhauser.
According to him, Avianca recognizes that flying is no longer a luxury but something basic. “If we don't look at who flies with low cost, we will lose more and more relevance”, he pointed out.
