Backpacking through Brazil: Belém and Manaus by boat

Certainly the north is the most exotic region to discover in Brazil, this area is home to most of the Amazon Rainforest, a region rich in natural beauty, history, arts and gastronomy.

Much sought after by foreigners who want to explore the largest rainforest in the world, the two largest cities in the region Bethlehem and manaus, are port and receive dozens of vessels every day. Among them, boats that make connections between the municipalities.

There are more than 1600 kilometers of distance between Belém and Manaus. Altogether there are 5 days of travel aboard regional boats. During the journey, the traveler has the opportunity to talk to natives and tourists from the four corners of the world, in addition to getting to know the routines of the people who live in this region, enjoying beautiful Amazonian landscapes and getting to know some riverside communities.

Don't expect luxury on this trip backpacking in Brazil, you boats do not offer much comfort and memorable cuisine. All very rustic, but unforgettable. The accommodation wings are separated into two classes: the hammock wing, where tourists share a room and sleep together with other people, and the private cabins, small rooms with only one bed.

To make the most of your trip, the ideal is to make a few stops and get to know some of the most coveted destinations in Brazil, such as Alter do Chão and Ilha do Marajó, in Pará, Parintins and the Anavilhanas Archipelago, in Amazonas.

Backpacking through Brazil: north coast of Alagoas and south coast of Pernambuco

Truth be told one of the most beautiful spots in the Brazilian coast is between these two states. The beauties of the state of alagoas are on the route known as “Coral Coast”, which begins in the municipality of Paripueira and ends in maragogi. The path passes through several paradisiacal beaches surrounded by coconut trees that follow the warm blue waters of the northeastern coast. already the state of Pernambuco reserves scenic beauties such as the famous Carneiros Beach and the amazing village of Port of Chickens.

On the route, enjoy the tranquility of the small towns on the north coast of Alagoas along with the beautiful landscapes that change along the way. Cliffs, natural pools, cinematic coconut groves, rivers, viewpoints, old mills and a rich cuisine are just some of the attractions that this region offers.

The effervescent culture of Pernambuco is noticed as soon as we cross the border with the alagoas. Gradually the catamarans of maragogi give space to the Pernambuco rafts that slide in the sea of Porto de Galinhas. In a few kilometers the landscape changes, it is difficult to choose the best one. For backpackers on the route, from Porto de Galinhas there is also the majestic Olinda, could be your next part of the road map, the historic city is well known for its carnival celebrations, but it is worth a visit regardless of the season.

Finalizing the script in Recife, cultural activities and an exciting nightlife fill the entire capital of Pernambuco, dispensing with great presentations, the third largest capital in the Northeast offers a wide variety of cuisine, concert halls, museums, cultural centers and countless attractions for you to enjoy during your trip.

Backpacking in Brazil: Serra Gaúcha and Serra Catarinense

For those who want to discover the charms of the South, the highlight is two mountain ranges perfect to be explored during the winter. With a large tourist structure, the Serra Gaúcha brings together the history and culture of European immigrants who came to Brazil at the end of the 19th century.

Getting to know the Caminhos de Pedra route, taking a Maria Fumaça tour, visiting Italian wineries and canteens or skiing in a modern snow park, can be some of the most fun attractions on your trip.

Cities like Nova Petrópolis, Bento Gonçalves and Caxias do Sul are true European scenarios in Brazilian territory. For backpackers who want affordable accommodation, consider escaping the high seasons to not be surprised by the prices. In Serra Gaúcha, Natal Luz moves all the towns in the mountains, and is also very popular during Holy Week. Especially in Gramado, in some events the city is overcrowded, taking prices up, like during the Film Festival, for example.

Already in Santa Catarina Mountains, valleys, waterfalls, rivers and araucaria forests fill the preserved nature of the destination. Highlight for the hills and canyons of the region, surrounded by mountains with peaks that reach more than 1,800 meters in height. Breathtaking viewpoints and views await you on this adventure! Being one of the few regions that snows in the country, the Santa Catarina Mountains are perfect to enjoy the chill in Brazil taking advantage of the low temperatures.
