Shows, exhibitions, dance shows, walks, festivals and a giant cake are among the free attractions in celebration of São Paulo's birthday

How not to love Sao Paulo? The largest city in Latin America is a great mix of styles, culture and entertainment. This January 25th, the capital that never sleeps celebrates its 465th anniversary with a party rhythm and many attractions.

They will be events with special programming to please all profiles occupying spaces in different regions of the city. And best of all, there's a lot to enjoy for free. There are shows, festivals, exhibitions, cultural walks and exciting performances to celebrate this important date.

Shows in Anhangabaú

THE São Paulo City Hall organized a special free program with shows that will take place on three stages in the central region of the city, close to Vale do Anhangabaú. Performances take place on January 25th at noon. Among the highlights are ludmilla, Pablo Vittar, Paulinho da ViolaRael and the return of the band Charlie Brown Jr. 

Museums with special schedule

You São Paulo Museums (MIS, Casa das Rosas, Museu do Catavento, Museu da Imigração, Museu da Casa Brasileira, Museu de Arte Sacra, Museu da Diversidade Sexual, Museu do Futebol and Pinacoteca) will have free admission during the anniversary of São Paulo, in addition to a special schedule. Pastel and Acai Festival

From the 25th to the 27th of January the Latin America Memorial hosts two festivals: Pastel and Açaí. Free admission, events start at 11 am. The space will also feature shows, craft fair and activities for children.

City center tour 

In celebration of the anniversary of Sao Paulo, The Shopping Light promotes a free guided walking tour of the city center on the 25th, starting at 9 am. Participants will walk through historic sites in the capital and end the tour at the top of the Alexandre Mackenzie Building, with a special view of the Anhangabaú Valley.

Light show at the Ibirapuera Fountain

To celebrate the birthday of Sao Paulo, The Ibirapuera fountain receives a special celebration. With a show of lights and colors, the show will present the city's history through some of the capital's iconic points. The event is free and takes place from January 25 to February 3 in two sessions, at 8:30 pm and 9 pm.

Giant cake from Carlos Bakery

The famous cake house Carlo's Bakery celebrates the capital's birthday by distributing 465 pieces of a 50kg cake to the public free of charge. The party will take place at the store's unit on Rua Bela Cintra, at 11 am on the 25th, and will be attended by Mayor Bruno Covas.

Canasta Cheese Festival 

Rua Joaquim Távora, at number 605, in Vila Mariana, will at the same time receive the Canasta Cheese Festival, of Milk cream, gives  Boteco food and gives craft beer, on the 26th and 27th of January, from 12pm to 7pm. Entrance is free.

Surf Festival on Avenida Paulista

The São Paulo beach, Av. Paulista, will host a surf culture festival. The event will occupy several spaces in the Fiesp Cultural Center between January 25th and February 3rd with a complete schedule.

The public will be able to see the traditional International Exhibition of Surfing Art and Culture, watch the selection of films from the Almasurf Film Festival and enjoy two days of musical shows, with performances by Nômade Orquestra, Black Alien, Bixiga 70 and Cynthia Luz – all free of charge.

Orchestra and Dance at the Municipal

On the 25th of January, the Sao Paulo Municipal Theater celebrates the city's anniversary in style. From 2 pm, the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de São Paulo takes the stage to perform a concert with pieces by Antônio Carlos Gomes, John Williams, among others. At 7 pm, the City Ballet presents the show “Das Tripas…Coração”.

To close the 25-hour celebration, on the 26th, at noon, the Experimental Repertoire Orchestra also performs a concert in the concert hall. The program features works by Giuseppe Verdi, Alberto Nepomuceno, among other composers. Tickets are free and will be distributed two hours before each event.

Tribute to Tom Jobim

The 25th is not only the birthday of Sao Paulo as would also be the date on which Tom Jobim would be 92 years old. In a tribute to the composer, Caixa Cultural presents “Tom Jobim Instrumental”, with several concerts performed by great Brazilian instrumentalists. The presentations take place on the 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th, at 7:45 pm with free admission.

Pilates class at Villa Lobos

THE Kero Coco promotes free healthy activities during the summer in Villa Lobos park. On the 27th, there will be a yoga class from 9 am to 12 pm. There will be three classes in the middle of nature lasting 45 minutes each, taught by Professor Juliana Tabet. To participate, simply register on site, but spaces are limited.

Music in the Cathedral

THE GPA Institute Orchestra performs a presentation on the 25th, starting at 10:30 am, at the Sé Cathedral in celebration of the city's anniversary. The repertoire includes 'Sampa' by Caetano Veloso, 'Sinfonia Paulistana' by Billy Blanco, 'Suite St. Paul's' by Gustav Holst, among other works.

Lenin's Show

THE Sesc Itaquera promotes on January 25, from 15:30 a concert by the singer Lenin “In Transit: The Tone Is Grave; Time is Brief”. In addition to free entry, there is no need to collect tickets.

Special programming at Mercadão 

on the day when Sao Paulo turns 465, the São Paulo Municipal Market also celebrates its anniversary and offers several special attractions for visitors.

On holiday Friday, a cake weighing more than half a ton and various types
of fruits will be finalized under the command of Professor Ricardo Magalhães. The congratulations (at 11:45 am) will be under the special presentation of the urban troubadours. After the official ceremony, from 14:00 the cake will be offered to the public. In addition, there will also be street art performances in different parts of the Mercadão. On the 26th, artistic presentations continue all day.

Poetic walk on Avenida Paulista

On the 25th, the network of Literary House Museums makes a special tour based on the works of the poets Haroldo de Campos, Mário de Andrade and Guilherme Almeida. The objective is to experience aspects of the capital from the perspective of the three great writers. The walk starts at 10 am on the House of Roses with a welcome breakfast.

Café at Farol Santander

THE Lighthouse Cafe, located at the top of the building Santander lighthouse, will distribute 465 coffees on the strip to visitors on a first-come, first-served basis. Despite the free coffee, it is worth remembering that the ticket to access the building costs R$ 20. In addition to exhibitions, from the top it is possible to have a privileged view of the city.

photographic walk

THE Emma Klabin Museum on the 25th, a free photographic walk through the Jardim Europa neighborhood. No professional equipment is needed, participants can even use their cell phones. The meeting point will be at 2:30 pm at the museum itself, which is located at Rua Portugal, 43.

Exhibitions at MASP

THE MASP  also has an exclusive program to celebrate the anniversary of Sao Paulo. During the 25th, in addition to its permanent exhibitions, the museum also presents those that passed through its program in 2018 as part of the cycle “Afro-Atlantic Stories”. In addition to free entry, the opening hours will be extended until 22:00.

Music at the Brazilian House Museum

THE Brazilian House Museum receive the samba Anderson Chocolate and the Vila Maria's Old Guard to present the best of São Paulo root samba in the project Music on the MCB. The attraction starts at 11 am, but the museum will also have other shows throughout the day.

Wingsuit flight on Avenida Paulista

On January 25th, starting at 1 am, three Brazilian wingsuit athletes – Flávio Jordão, Lucas de Zorzi and Rick Fragnani – will fly over the Paulista Avenue. With the wings of the jumpsuit lit up, they will jump out of a helicopter and land on the avenue itself. Those who are there can check out the show in the skies for free.
