Another novelty that becomes accessible from January 10th is that the 132 health units will start performing rapid tests on people with symptoms of Covid-19. “Our goal is to gain more speed in diagnosing contaminated people”, said the director of Primary Health Care, Caroline Schirmer, when the official announcement was made.

The Municipal Health Department expanded the locations where this type of test is being carried out in an effort to change the strategy to stop the spread of the Ômicron variant. The diagnosis comes out much faster (in less than 30 minutes). According to secretary Mauro Sparta, “the sooner the result, the sooner we can isolate the individual who tests positive. That way we prevent the spread of the disease.”

Those who have a negative result, but who still feel the symptoms, will be referred for an RT-PCR test from the service units.

Even during the weekend efforts to combat the virus continue in full force. On Sunday, January 9, the city government released the balance of antigen tests offered in nine health units. There were a total of 1,080 rapid tests for Covid-19, with 313 positive results.

We also collected 39 RT-PCR exams from the Navegantes Unit and 48 from the Morro Santana Unit. The test was available from 9 am to 4 pm, for people who had symptoms such as fever or chills, sore throat, cough, headache, runny nose, diarrhea, change in smell or taste and body pain.

The large volume of patients who said they had these symptoms meant that the vaccination itself did not happen. The service must be taken from Monday, the 10th.

It is also necessary to remember that it is flu season and that this campaign for this vaccine takes place at the same time as the one for Covid. As the symptoms are similar for both diseases, it is necessary to pay attention to some details. Check out some common questions taken from City Hall website:

  • Does anyone who has been vaccinated against Covid-19 need to wait to get vaccinated against the flu?

It is possible to have both vaccines on the same day. There is no need for a minimum interval of 14 days between doses of the flu vaccine and Covid-19.

  • Can't people with Covid-19 get vaccinated against the flu?

You must wait 28 days from the onset of symptoms to receive the flu vaccine.

  • Can people with the flu receive the flu vaccine?

You have to wait for the acute flu frame to pass before receiving the vaccine

  • Where can I take the rapid flu test?

There is no outpatient influenza test in the SUS network in Brazil. In Porto Alegre, tests are carried out in cases of hospitalization, according to the protocol of the Ministry of Health.

  • I got the flu shot in 2021. Can I get it again now?

No, you have to wait for the campaign to start with the new strains in 2022. The campaign does not yet have a set date.

  • What are the priority groups that have not reached the immunization target in Porto Alegre?

Children, health workers, pregnant women, teachers, puerperal women, security forces, people with comorbidities and disabilities did not reach the goal. In 2021, the goal in the capital was reached only in the elderly and indigenous groups.
