THE Veadeiros Plateau guards the largest portion of continuous cerrado in the world. Located in the northeast of the state of Goiás, the immense area with 65,514 hectares has unique plant formations, being also one of the oldest regions on the planet, with more than two billion years. The name comes from the number of pampas deer that inhabit this peculiar area of the country, formed by kilometers of plateaus, paths and plateaus.

THE Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park it was created in 1961 with the aim of preserving the area, and was declared a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. In addition to conservation, the park has scientific research, environmental education and public visitation as its objectives.

– Alto Paraíso

– Village of Engenho

Located 27 km from the city center of Cavalcante Povoado do Engenho II is a historic site and Kalunga Cultural Heritage. And the largest remaining quilombo community in Brazil, with around 4,000 citizens who only had contact with “civilization” less than 30 years ago – a magical people with strong black blood.

– Teresina de Goiás

– Rio Preto jumps

It is the main attraction of the national park and is closest to the village of São Jorge. The huge falls, one 80 m high and the other 120 m, cut through an immense gorge surrounded by typical Cerrado vegetation. The first fall flows into a huge well of dark water with a huge demarcated area for bathing, the second attraction can be observed through a wooden gazebo built on its side.

- Valley of the Moon

Peculiar rock formations sculpted thousands of years ago by the waters of the São Miguel River form scenarios that resemble lunar landscapes. The area with numerous craters has 3 natural pools where visitors can cool off.

– Santa Barbara Waterfall

The Santa Bárbara Waterfall is in the municipality of Cavalcante. Its huge blue well with crystal clear water amidst dense vegetation makes the attraction a true oasis. The waterfall is 40 m high and the well can reach up to 3 m deep, depending on the season.

– Almécegas I and II

The Waterfall is in the Fazenda São Bento complex, the first fall is 45 meters high with several waterfalls that plummet into a well of green tones. The Almécegas II waterfall is 400m away and has a huge bathing well.

– Leather Waterfall

The Couros Waterfalls have a drop of 100 meters and are named after the waters of the Couros River. The river makes an incredible sequence of rapids, waterfalls and wells.

– Loquinhas

One of the most beautiful hikes in Chapada. It is a tour in the midst of high-altitude fields full of flowers, which aims to reach the sources of the Macacão River, at the top of a waterfall about 200m high.

The closest airport to Chapada dos Veadeiros is Brasília. Therefore, the best way to get there is by car or bus.

Brasília International Airport, Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek, is the closest to the national park, and receives international and national flights departing from the main capitals of the country.

By car
Departing from the federal capital, which is about 250 km from Alto Paraíso, the traveler must take the BR 020, towards Formosa (GO). After the city of Planaltina, it is necessary to pay attention to the interchange that indicates the GO 118, the road that leads to Alto Paraíso and passes through São Gabriel and São João D'Aliança. From there, take the GO 327 (dirt road) towards Colinas do Sul and drive 38 km to Povoado de São Jorge, where the entrance to the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park.

Best time to visit Chapada dos Veadeiros:

Chapada dos veadeiros receives tourists throughout the year. The average annual temperature is 24 to 26ºC. The best time to practice adventures is the dry season, when the temperature is lower, it rains little and the rocks are not hot or slippery, preventing accidents and burns.

The best time to visit is from April to October, and in the months of July and August the waters are more crystalline due to the period of greater drought in the cerrado.

  • Credit and debit cards are not accepted, except for some establishments. It is best to have cash;
  • There are thermal water pools in the region, with temperature below body temperature. It's cool to go to these places at night, or if it's raining;
  • During the months of May/June and September/October, it is when the vegetation explodes in impressive flowers, the famous 'flowers of the cerrado'. For those who photograph, it's a full plate;
  • If you go to São Jorge by car, fill up first, last option Alto Paraíso via GO-118.
