The capital of Maranhão has been known as the “Brazilian Jamaica” since the 1980s, a cultural expression that began with sailors in the port, spread throughout the city and conquered Maranhão.
São Luís of maranhão, a coastal city in northeastern Brazil, has an average annual temperature of 27ºC, which makes it the ideal destination for those who enjoy sun all year round. But the beach destination is also rich in culture: the bumba-meu-boi is the largest cultural event in the region, which also features traditional festivities of “quadrilhas juninas”, the largest architectural ensemble of Portuguese tiles in the country, and a gastronomy that enchants and very, very reggae!
Founded in 1612 by the French, its urban settlement is characteristically Portuguese, with mansions with typical 19th-century tile facades. The city is a postcard of Brazil and a World Heritage Site recognized by Unesco since 1997.
The Historic Center houses museums (such as reggae, visual arts and religious art), Feirinha São Luís and Igreja da Sé. In its surroundings, there are the Palaces of the Lions and La Ravardière, respectively the seat of the state government and the prefecture, and the Casa de Cultura Huguenot Daniel de La Touche, a museum without governmental affiliations and which takes care of the memory of the French foundation of São Luís – all of them constructions that are already worthy of their architectural value.
The local beaches stand out, with warm waters and strips of white sand. The main natural attraction, however, is outside the municipality, located in a national park within the city of barriers: they are the Maranhão sheets, internationally known destination for high sand dunes with lakes and lakes, also called “tropical desert”. One of the great attractions is the helicopter ride over the dunes, which provides a unique experience.
It is possible to reach the place by car, by means of intercity transport or through tourist agencies, such as Eco Adventure Tour, one of the pioneers in the region that has been serving since 1998.
Another charming option close to the capital is the city of Alcantara. The region was originally a village of Indians called Tupuitapera (land of Indians), but in the 15th century it also suffered French domination and Portuguese occupation. Its peculiarity lies in the historical importance in the period of Dutch domination, contributing with sugar mills to the local economy. The Nossa Senhora dos Remédios and Nossa Senhora do Carmo convents are massive constructions that make the city tour worthwhile.
It is important to remember that São Luís It has an international airport (Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport), the main way for tourists to arrive, and it has a time difference of less than 3 hours in relation to Brasília's official time, in addition to not having daylight saving time.
