The Fernando de Noronha Archipelago is the first place in Brazil to ban the use and sale of single-use plastics

In a historic communiqué, the use and sale of straws, cups, plates, cutlery, bags and plastic bottles of less than half a liter will be prohibited. The use of styrofoam, another great villain of the beaches, will also be suspended, which may generate penalties for residents, tourists and legal entities. The Pernambuco destination is the first place in Brazil to propose a regulation in that format.

Sustainable policies are no longer a concern for our children and grandchildren, and little by little, measures are emerging that show the beginning of this change. Whoever is caught purchasing disposables that do not comply with the norm launched in Fernando de Noronha, will be subject to fines from half a minimum wage to 15 minimum wages.

The decree was made official for all establishments on the island, such as bars, kiosks, snack bars, hotels and tour agencies. The measure will come into effect on the day 11th of April 2019 and can be an incentive for this to be replicated in other tourist destinations, to serve as a model of environmental policy for the whole of Brazil in the future.

The benefits are immense

“Practically all the money collected from the environmental tax is used to take the garbage from the archipelago to the mainland”, says one of the residents of Fernando de Noronha. The fee she refers to is the Environmental Preservation Fee – TPA, paid by all visitors who disembark on the island.

The amount varies according to the period of stay and serves as a financial reserve to reduce the environmental impacts caused in the archipelago. In fact, one of the biggest environmental problems in Fernando de Noronha is garbage. About 8 tons of garbage are produced daily, according to a survey by the ICMBio made in 2014.

The amount of garbage produced grows gradually according to the volume of tourists and hotels on the island. As it is a region of environmental preservation and National Park, there are several types of important limitations that seek to preserve the unique biome found in this part of the Brazilian coast, located about 540 km from Recife.

How will the penalty be

Residents, tourists and businesses can be fined if they fail to comply with the new measure. At the first moment, whoever is caught will be notified and, if repeated, will be charged a fine that can vary from half a minimum wage to 15 minimum wages, depending on the severity.

garbage in the oceans

A study published in Davos World Economic Forum, estimated that by 2050 our oceans will have more plastic than fish. An alarming number that worries and mobilizes thousands of organizations and activists concerned with the cause. The same event, numerous solutions were suggested to reduce the impact of waste in the world, including changing the way packaging and plastics in general are produced.

how can you help

Even if this law is not in your city, it costs nothing to reduce the consumption of disposables in our daily lives. A few simple changes can transform consumption in big cities. Use returnable bags when going to the market, adopt a squeeze to drink water and reduce the use of plastic straws, cups and cutlery, this revolution can already be a good start.
