Can you imagine traveling the world working on organic farms in different countries? In search of an increasingly simple life, initiatives based on social innovations that modernize the usual way of life have appeared in all corners of the world for decades. With the aim of improving conviviality and the quality of life of people in the new century, new formats of economy are always thought of, which are in harmony with nature, generating incalculable experiences for countless travelers.
And it is in this scenario that, almost spontaneously, different creative solutions emerge, such as the organization WWOOF – World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, in Portuguese, World Network of Opportunities in Organic Farms, which is a large exchange network that enables people can travel the world working on farms and ecovillages. You trade a few hours of work (on average 4-6 hours a day) for learning, room and board. All in the midst of nature, learning about different cultures, techniques for ecological constructions, botany, natural agriculture, among other concepts of simple life.
The proposal that began in England, in the 70s, is gaining more and more supporters with the facilities of the internet, and today, it already has more than 400 farms spread all over the world. The activities already take place in more than 50 countries, including destinations such as Brazil, Italy, Thailand, Canada and New Zealand. An innovative way for those who want to discover new destinations, or travel for the long term at affordable prices.
In Brazil, the WWOOF already has registered farms in some states such as: Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, among others.
HOW IT IS
The jobs are always varied, everything will depend on the region and the chosen farm. The length of stay is agreed between you and the farm owner. Part of your stay will be dedicated to the numerous tasks you can have on the farm, whether direct farming, picking fruits and vegetables, or helping with routine tasks.
HOW TO REGISTER
The traveler who wants to participate in the network, being a permanent WWOOF volunteer, needs to contribute an amount per year. This cost may vary according to each destination, being between US$0 and US$78 dollars. To travel through an organic farm in Brazil, for example, the annual cost is U$38. However, there may be in-person fees depending on the farm you choose, but you don't have to worry, as the proposal is to create an accessible experience, all values are symbolic. As soon as you confirm the registration, you will receive a list of organic farms in the chosen country, see which farms are in your preferred destinations and create your itinerary. Remembering that after defining the destinations, it is necessary to send an email to the chosen farm expressing your interest and answering your questions about the region and about the jobs available there. At the end of the WWOOF website you will see the complete list of all countries.
