Completely renovated and cage-free, the Rio de Janeiro Zoo will be transformed into an ecological park focused on animal welfare

That's because the place is undergoing a renovation - for the better - that promises to give a new meaning to the space.
With its reopening scheduled for July this year, the location will even change its name and will be renamed BioPark. After the work, which is estimated at 80 million reais, the 155,000 square meter space will be focused on animal welfare. In addition, in partnership with research institutions and universities across the country, the new park will have an environmental education and biodiversity conservation program.
A happier home for animals
To provide for the animals' well-being, the birds' area, for example, will gain more than 2,000 square meters of native forest, housing about 220 animals and 50 different species. In addition, with more than 22 thousand square meters, another environment will imitate an African savannah and will bring together giraffes, zebras, hippos, ostriches, among other animals, roaming freely. This space will have an artificial river with 400 meters of extension that can be crossed by boats.
According to the Veja Rio Magazine , a “study of behavior and reproduction under human care will make it possible for giraffes to become an instrument of awareness of current and future generations, contributing to the genetics of the species and population management in Latin America”.
In addition, cold-blooded animals, such as snakes and alligators, will also have a place specially dedicated to them. Big cats and canids such as jaguars, maned wolves and lions will also be in a large suitable area. One of the most beloved animals by the public, the elephants will gain huge pools to take a refreshing bath.
Finally, another place will be like a “little farm”, where children will be able to have contact and learn more about some animals. The little ones will still be able to have fun in a playground that will also be part of the new space.
How to visit BioParque, the new Zoo in Rio de Janeiro
