We interviewed a Brazilian who lives in New York to find out how the pandemic situation is in the city and what the projections are for the future

You U.S, like Brazil, remain at the top of the countries most affected by the new coronavirus pandemic. Unlike European countries, which are already moving towards a reality that is increasingly closer to normality, albeit with certain precautions and restrictions, the US remains the country with the highest number of infected, with daily cases of new ones infected.

But how is the situation in the country, at the moment, for those who live there and have had their daily lives changed? What was it like to experience this situation on a daily basis and what are the projections for the future? To better understand all this, we interviewed Marina Tajra Araujo, resident of New York and CEO of New York & You, a company that receives Brazilian tourists in the country.

In addition to presenting a little about the current panorama of the country, she also reported expectations about the future of tourism there.

Better Travel Guide – Can you tell me what the current situation in New York is like from the perspective of a resident? Was there effective action and concern from the local government?

R: The local and state government made a very interesting program open to the entire population. For 110 days there were daily press conferences that informed us about the spread of the disease in New York City and throughout the rest of the state. We feel very secure because of the information. Today, I still don't feel safe enough to take the subway and go to restaurants even outside. We also avoid walking in busier parks like Central Park.

Better Travel Guide – Did the population, in general, respect the rules of social distancing? How has your personal life been these past two months?

A: I think most of the population respected and still respects the rules of distancing! But we still see many people without masks. My family and I remain in isolation, we have not used the subway since the beginning of the lockdown and we only walk through parks and public areas without agglomerations and in which we feel safe.

Better Travel Guide – How are international flights arriving in New York going? Are there many restrictions and security measures you can tell us about?

A: Only people from certain countries can enter the US: Australia, Chile, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Canada (by plane). All persons entering the US are required to remain in quarantine or are required to maintain social distancing, depending on each state's rules.

Better Travel Guide – Could you say what the main precautions are being taken in relation to hotels, restaurants, visits and attractions, etc?

A: Restaurants can only work with tables outside – sidewalks or terraces. Calls in closed environments are prohibited. All tourist attractions are still closed.

Better Travel Guide – Why should a Brazilian tourist include New York as a destination once everything is normalized?

A: Because for sure when tourism resumes, the city will already be safe. The city will not reopen to tourists if it is not able to receive them prioritizing safety.

Better Travel Guide – What can Brazilian tourists who want to visit New York after the pandemic expect?

A: Many protocols must be added everywhere, such as wearing masks, distancing in lines, reduced number of visitors to museums and attractions.

Better Travel Guide –  How is New York & You preparing to receive the tourist once the situation is under control? Are there plans to provide individual safety items such as masks, hand sanitizer and others?

A: We are a receptive agency with tour and travel planning services for New York. We will provide gel masks and alcohol to all our customers before the tours.

Better Travel Guide – Have you been receiving requests from tourists for travel later this year or in 2021? If so, could you tell us what are the most common questions at this first moment?

A: Yes, I'm getting a lot of budget requests for 2021, including for January. What people look for the most are hotel and itinerary tips to optimize their trip. The only question they ask is about the opening date of the borders, which is something we cannot answer.
