The formation of the city is directly linked with the extraction of silver started in the second half of the 13th century. Founded by a colony of miners attracted by the vast ore deposits scattered throughout the area, Kutná Hora underwent rapid development and became the second most important area in the Czech Republic. 

Today, the small town of central Bohemia is the only municipality in this region to be proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Kutná Hora is just 84 km from Prague and can be reached easily by train, rental car or with tourist agencies. The journey between the two cities takes less than 1h30min. Check the options:


Trains from Prague to Kutná Hora leave from Hlavní nádraží station, located on the red C line of the metro. This is in fact the cheapest way to get to the city. 

Trains leave Prague every two hours in the morning and every hour during the rest of the day. Despite the easy access, getting to Kutná Hora can seem a little complicated, as the destination has 3 train stations, they are:

  • 1st – Kutná Hora hlavní nádraží, which can be abbreviated as “Kutná Hora hl.n”. on tickets 
  • 2nd – Kutná Hora-Sedlec, closest station to the Sedlec Ossuary
  • 3rd – Kutná Hora město, station closest to the historic center (“město” means “city”)

The first station is 4 km from the center of Kutná Hora and is where you need to get off the Prague train to change. 

The second stage of the trip is to take the small local train that connects the station with the other two that follow. 

If you don't want to walk the 4 km between the 1st station and the historic center, or pay a taxi or take the bus, buy your ticket to the 3rd station (Kutná Hora město). The price is the same, you save legs and you can even stop at the 2nd station to see the Sedlec Ossuary before heading downtown.

Another option to get to Kutna Hora from Prague is to use the buses that leave from the Florenc bus station. The journey takes just over 1 hour and the stop is ugly in the center of the city, close to the main tourist attractions of the destination.

Sedlec Ossuary

As mentioned earlier, Capela de Ossos is the main tourist spot in the city. The ossuary is just 2.5 km from the historic center of Kutná Hora and can be easily accessed via the Kutná Hora-Sedlec station. 

The site was built in 1300, but its decoration with human bones was only made in 1870. The Ossuary of Sedlec is considered the largest in Europe and its interior decoration has bones of more than 50 thousand people.

The decoration considered by many macabre, has skulls, femurs and bones piled up on all sides, forming columns, chandeliers and arches throughout the chapel.

Santa Barbara Cathedral

THE Chrám Svaté Barbory, or Cathedral of Santa Bárbara, has an impressive Gothic facade and began to be built in 1388. The process to finish the chapel was interrupted several times for almost 500 years, being ready only in 1905. 

The Church is located near the historic center next to a natural viewpoint with a panoramic view of the city. 

Jesuit College

The Jesuits arrived in Kutná Hora in 1626 and decided to dedicate themselves exclusively to the education of children born in the region. The Jesuit College is located near the Cathedral of Santa Bárbara and was built in 1667. Today, the building houses an incredible art gallery open to visitors.

Column of Plague

Like other cities in Europe, Kutná Hora also has its own Column of the Plague, a beautiful 16-meter-tall Baroque sculpture built by the Jesuit Frantisek Baugut and installed after the last outbreak of the Black Death in 1713.
