The Real Gabinete Português de Literatura has served as locations for films, soap operas and miniseries.

Created in the 19th century, the institution is a true tribute to Portuguese culture on Brazilian soil and began just 15 years after the Independence of Brazil, when 43 Portuguese immigrants created a “reading cabinet” inspired by cultural centers of the same format that were increasingly consolidated in Europe. The objective was to bring some of the Portuguese cultural wealth to the immigrants who were starting to live in the Rio de Janeiro, at the time capital of the Empire.

Today, for those who pass near the Uruguaiana subway in the center of the state capital, they cannot imagine the history of the traditional Portuguese institution. The imposing building that houses the library has luxurious architecture and was elected by “Time” magazine as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. THE Royal Portuguese Literature Office, also has the largest collection of Lusitanian works outside of Portugal and the building is located in the historic part of downtown Rio and functions as a library, study center and cultural institution.
