Alto Ribeira Tourist State Park is considered one of the most important Conservation Units in the world

THE PETAR it houses the largest fraction of preserved Atlantic Forest in Brazil and more than 300 caves. As a result, it is now considered a World Heritage Site, recognized by UNESCO.

The park is located in the extreme south of the State of São Paulo, between the cities of Iporanga and Apiaí. In addition, it is close to other cities such as Registro and large parks such as Ilha do Cardoso State Park (Cananéia), Intervales State Park (Ribeirão Grande) and Jacupiranga State Park (Eldorado).

Inside the park there are more than 250 cataloged caves, the highest number in a single area in Latin America, in addition to valleys, mountains, rivers and waterfalls.

The park is divided into four nuclei: Santana, Ouro Grosso, Casa de Pedra and Caboclos. Until August 2013, twelve caves were open for visitation. However, in the Casa de Pedra nucleus, only the trail to the entrance of the cave works, which has a 250 m high portal (one of the largest in the world).
In addition to the numerous caves and waterfalls, there are other attractions at PETAR, such as the “viewpoints”, ecological trails, visits to the Historic Center in Iporanga, handicrafts in clay, the Casa do Artesão in the city of Apiaí, canoe trips in the Ribeira River in Iguapé and luais with bonfires on the banks of the Betari River.

When is the best time to visit PETAR?

Finally, the best time to visit the Park is, surprisingly, between April and November, due to the stability of the climate.

Differently, from December to March, when it rains a lot and the roads become difficult to access. In addition, only a few caves are open for visitation.

As a result, those that are open have areas of intensive use (any visitor can go), extensive use (not everyone can go, only with prior authorization from the park management) and restricted use (totally closed to visitors). This means that the excessive number of visits does not degrade this rich and fragile environment, for example.
