The capital Porto Velho is not usually remembered by tourists when deciding on a new destination, but the city can surprise you. Leaning against the Madeira River, the main attraction of the city, it is possible to take pleasant boat trips to the Santo Antônio rapids.

Enjoy the green areas of the city. In Praça das 3 Caixas D'água is the main postcard of the city, three huge reservoirs that supplied the city until 1957. In a short walk it is possible to visit some famous buildings in the capital, such as the Cathedral Sagrado Coração de Jesus and the Getúlio Vargas Palace.

Starting from Porto Velho, going down the Madeira River, you reach the Extractive Reserve of Lago do Cuniã, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Amazon. It is a region full of streams, which cross flooded fields and forests where the fauna of the region is concentrated, especially water birds, caimans and fish such as pirarucu, the largest in the amazon.
