Famous for the production of quality wines, the Portuguese city preserves its medieval heritage and centuries-old businesses

Located 313 km from Lisbon, Harbor it is already part of the route for wine lovers, but it has many attractions that delight tourists who pass through its charming cobbled streets. THE City is one of the oldest Portugal and maintains the tradition with many museums and medieval remains, being considered a world heritage site by UNESCO.

The city's main postcards are located in the historic center and preserve the local past. The highlights are the churches of Santa Clara (1416), São Francisco (1425) and São Nicolau (1758) and the Fernandina Wall, a structure that began to be erected in 1336 and aimed to protect the city.

Other tourist attractions Harbor are the traditional shops, such as Armazém Fernandes, Mattos & Companhia, opened in 1886, Livraria Lello, opened in 1906, and the colorful houses on the slopes of the Baixo Sé neighborhood.

In addition, the neighboring city is a focus for wine lovers. Vila Nova Gaia is on the other side of the Douro River and is home to 19th century cellars and wine productions that allow free visits and tastings.

Ribeira Pier

The region overlooks the Douro River and is surrounded by narrow cobbled streets and colorful houses. The tourist also has many options of bars and restaurants. This is where the city's main fireworks display on New Year's Eve takes place.

Sao Bento Railway Station

The station began to be built in the year 1900 and was once the seat of a convent. The walls are cream colored and covered in blue illustrations depicting battles and everyday scenes.

Church of San Francisco

The construction was made between 1383 and 1425 and has a very rich interior with walls covered in gold details.

Church of St. Nicholas

Located next to Palácio da Bolsa, this church was rebuilt in 1762 after a fire destroyed much of the structure. The space is not very big, but the visit is worth it to appreciate the baroque style of the 18th century.

Livraria Lello

Considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, it is located in a neo-gothic style building on Rua das Carmelitas. The interior is lined with wooden bookcases that surround a red staircase that leads to the second-floor café.

Bolhão Market

Mercado do Bolhão is a traditional market housed in a building built in 1917. The attraction is close to the São Bento Railway Station, and offers different types of cheeses, breads, sweets and flowers, as well as many souvenirs from the city.

Stock Exchange Palace

The majestic building is one of the main tourist attractions in the city. Built in the 19th century, it allows guided tours and welcomes more than 200,000 people a year interested in the luxurious Arabian Hall decorated in gold, the grand staircases and the Patio das Nações, which is covered with mosaics and a glass ceiling. Another attraction is Viniportugal, where tastings of wines from all over the country are offered.

How to get to Porto

By airplane

Francisco Sá Carneiro do Porto Airport is just 11 km from the city center and receives flights from Brazil daily. The airline TAP operates nonstop flights departing from São Paulo. Other companies offer the route with stops in Lisbon and Madrid. Those who already come from another European destination can choose a low-cost airline.

By train

Porto train station receives trains daily from Lisbon, Madrid and Paris. Leaving Lisbon it is possible to use the service of two companies that make the route; the Intercidades train that connects all the main cities in Portugal, and the Alfapendular train, the fastest option, as the trip only passes through the main cities from the south to the north of the country.

The seasons in Portugal are opposite to those in Brazil. When it's summer here, it's winter there. The city of Porto has mild temperatures throughout the year, but despite receiving many sunny days, the climate of the destination is totally crazy and confusing. Regardless of the season you visit, always have a jacket in your backpack. During the winter and autumn (October to April) the rainiest time of the city occurs. Between the months of May and September, the climate is hotter and drier.
