By On September 30, the World Travel Awards, considered the “Oscars” of tourism, revealed the list of winners of the 24th edition of the award that recognizes the best destinations, establishments and companies in the tourism sector. Awarding Portugal as the big winner of the night.
The country took 37 of the more than 100 awards. Between them, Portugal was chosen for the first time as the Best European Destination 2017, displacing countries such as Austria, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
In addition to this title, Portugal also took home important awards such as: best destination from Praia da Europe (Algarve); Best Island Destination (Madeira Island); Best Cruise Port (Porto de Lisboa) and, for the 4th consecutive time, the Best Tourism Organization for the work of Turismo de Portugal.

Besides Portugal, other European cities were also awarded at the event such as Saint Petersburg, which received the title of Best City, Barcelona as Best Destination for Conferences and Geneva as Best Getaway. The Responsible Tourism award went to a hotel pool called Costa Navarino, in Peloponnese, Greece.
