Researchers claim that mountain hikes cause positive changes in our brain  

If you love taking a good walk in nature, know that it could be changing your brain – for the better, of course. According to a study carried out by the scientific publication Journal of Environmental Science and Technology, a short walk of just five minutes a day, even in large urban centers, already generates incredible changes in our body and mind.

However, according to the study, if this hike is on the mountain or in some space with lots of green and nature, our self-esteem also starts to improve. Research psychologists Ruth Ann Atchley and Dr. David L. Strayer argue that people who put technology aside – be it a tablet, television, cell phone or computer – for just four days increase their problem-solving skills in 50% and become much more creative.

To the University of Kansas portal, in the USA, Dr. Atchley claimed that nature can stimulate the human mind without the common and threatening distractions of everyday life in the 21st century, such as technology. “Nature is a place where our minds can rest, relax and lessen threat responses,” Atchley said. “So it gives us remaining resources – to be creative, imaginative, to solve problems – that allow us to be better, happier people, who engage more productively with others.”

Nature changes our brain

This study was a pioneer in identifying the systematic changes in cognitive function from contact with nature. Other points also observed is that outdoor activities such as trekking and hiking help, in addition to everything, the ability to concentrate. Scholars have stated that it is in these moments when we really disconnect from problems, turning off our cell phone and looking at nature, that is when we realize how our mind really works.

The research also identified that people who practice walking and activities close to nature, climbing mountains, generate a lower blood flow, which makes the brain areas related to bad mood and negative feelings, such as sadness, worry, among others, be deactivated.
