Things to do in Tulum

Tired of seeing so many child characters? Calm down, don't despair and enjoy a quick change of scenery. At just 41 kilometers by car and half an hour's travel, you can reach tulum, a pre-Columbian walled Mayan city that served as an important port for Coba, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

The ruins are situated on 40-foot-tall cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea. It was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayans and was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began to occupy Mexico.

Tulum is one of the most visited archaeological areas. It has modest structures compared to other major Mayan cities, but manages to capture the imagination like no other, perhaps conjuring up visions of pre-Columbian traders arriving in canoes laden with goods, and the Mayan workers who greeted them, gazing at the same exhilarating vistas.

Two other attractions stand out in the region. At first, Sian Ka'an (Mayan Yucateca for “where the sky is born”) is one of the most biodiverse places in the world, composed of a delicate balance of ecosystems: tropical forests and coral reefs, mangroves and savannas, blue lagoons and miles of pristine beaches.

It is one of the few places in the world where petenes (islands of trees that form in swamps) thrive and cenotes (fresh water holes) are found. It is home to a brilliant diversity of fauna, with spider monkeys, howler monkeys, American crocodiles, jaguars, cougars, Central American tapirs, four species of sea turtles, giant land crabs, over 330 species of birds (including spoonbills and flamingos), manatees, dolphins and around 400 species of fish.

In the second we have the contemporary art museum at the Azulik hotel, with a natural setting that will make you feel like you are in a cocoon. Curved walkways and bridges made of vine-like bejuco wood guide you through works of art, while undulating cement walls open onto clear skies and dense rainforest.

The SFER IK Museion was designed so that viewers could experience world-class art alongside Tulum's natural elements. Recommended even for those who know nothing about art. Totally unique and completely unexpected.
