Tiahuanaco or Tiwanaku is the most important archaeological site in the Bolivia. Heritage of Humanity, the ruins of Tiwanaku are close to Lake Titicaca, in a village of the same name 72 km from La Paz. One of the unmissable tours to do in the country.

In the attraction, the tourist will observe the capital of a powerful empire that dominated a large area of the southern Andes and reached its apogee between 500 and 900 AD.

There are some theories that a major drought caused the collapse of these people, but the real reason is still a mystery. The main attractions of the place are the Porta do Sol, a semi-underground temple and the remains of a pyramid.

Sun Gate

With approximately 10 tons, the port of the sun is one of the icons of Tiwanaku, it is not known for sure how this huge hewn stone was taken into the Kalasasaya Temple. The portal carries with it carved images at the top that form a calendar.

Akapana Pyramid

THE Akapana Pyramid it is the largest building in the old city, the building has 7 floors of terraces and is over 18 meters high.

It's the oldest Tiwanaku Temple, term Kalasasaya means “Place of Standing Stones” or “Temple of Standing Stones”. The most amazing thing, in addition to all this knowledge they had, is that the Kalasasaya Temple was built around 15,000 BC!!!

Ponce Monolith

The Ponce Monolith or Star 8, is inside the Kalasasaya Temple, is 3.40 meters high and is a sculpture of a single block. There are many symbols and icons carved with countless meanings.

The mysterious space was discovered in 1903 during an excavation in the region. The temple was built 2 meters below ground level and carries many curiosities. The one that draws the most attention is a huge wall built with stones where 175 heads were carved and a perfect drainage system, developed through stone channels that work to this day.

How to get to Tiwanaku

In La Paz it is possible to take buses that leave every half hour from José María Street, near the La Paz cemetery. The trip duration is 1:30hs. It is also possible to hire the services of receptive agencies in the region and arrive at the place by private transport.
