One of Britain's most famous landmarks, Buckingham Palace is the Queen's office and official residence.

Each August and September, the Queen opens her residence to visitors, offering them the chance to experience the opulent State Rooms and Garden, as well as some of the great treasures of the Royal Collection along the way. And don't forget to watch the spectacular Changing of the Guard ceremony, daily from May to July, and every other day the rest of the year.

Kensington Palace has been home to many members of the royal family, including Queen Victoria, Diana, the Princess of Wales and now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Windsor Castle is not only the Queen's favorite residence, but also the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world.

Be sure to see the Royal Apartments, the Chapel of St. George (where ten monarchs are buried), the Drawings Gallery and its traveling exhibitions, as well as Queen Mary's Dollhouse, the most famous in the world.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is steeped in over a thousand years of history, having been the site of the coronation of all English monarchs since 1066. It has also been the scene of 16 royal weddings, including the union of the Queen with His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, and more recently, the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Acquired by Queen Victoria in 1848, Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire has been the Scottish private residence of the British royal family ever since.

The Queen and her family normally spend the summer at the estate, which opens its doors, gardens and ballroom to the public from April to July each year.

Sandringham House in Norfolk is one of the Queen's favorite residences and where she spends Christmas with her family.

Since 1862, Sandringham has been the private residence of four generations of monarchs. It was once described as "the most comfortable house in England". You can visit it, as its interior facilities, gardens and museum are open to the public from April to November.

No trip to Edinburgh would be complete without a visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's official residence in Scotland. The palace is best known as the residence of Mary, Queen of Scots, where she married and witnessed the brutal murder of her secretary in her private chambers.

A tour of the palace will take you to the Royal Apartments, gardens and the Queen's Gallery, where you can see traveling exhibitions from the Royal Collection.
