Amazon Caribbean among the 10 best destinations for 2019
Alter do Chão is one of the great gems of the Rota dos Rios, a route that crosses part of the Amazon Forest aboard regional boats, which travel through the river “streets” and “avenues” that cross the North of Brazil. Nicknamed the Amazonian Caribbean, this small town gained international fame after a publication in the English newspaper The Guardian, putting Alter do Chão on the route of travelers who want to discover a paradisiacal side of the Amazon.
The village is also a stopping point for backpackers who are traveling by boat through the two largest capitals in the North region. The municipality of Santarém is located between Belém, capital of Pará and Manaus, capital of Amazonas, serving as a strategic stop for those traveling through the region.
For those who are not excited about long boat trips, the municipality of Santarém also has its own airport that receives domestic flights. Santarém International Airport – Maestro Wilson Fonseca is located about 35 minutes from the village of Alter do Chão.
Beauties of the Tapajós River and the Alter do Chão Aquifer
The comparison with the Caribbean beaches is due to the immense rivers and springs of crystalline waters, all suitable for unforgettable bathing. The channels, streams, lagoons and rivers form small beaches of fresh water and varied characteristics, in a preserved scenario with little human impact.
Few people know, but the Alter do Chão Aquifer is three times larger than the Guarani Aquifer, located in the Southeast region, previously considered the largest in Brazil. With colossal dimensions, this has become one of the largest natural reserves of fresh water in the world, passing through the states of Pará, Amazonas and Amapá.
