You have possibly heard of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World or of 7 Wonders of the Modern World. But, for those who like a good adventure, it's time to discover the 7 Natural Wonders of the World! There are many places that deserve this title, so the Foundation New7Wonders organized the New7Wonders Of Nature. With the intention of defining which are the seven natural wonders of the planet.

The foundation selected 440 participants representing 220 different countries. After that, the Panel of Experts led by Professor Federico Mayor, Director-General of UNESCO, reduced the number of participants to 77.

In July 2009, a list of 28 finalist candidates was opened for popular vote. Two years later, in 2011, the 7 Natural Wonders of the World were announced. See below which locations were chosen by popular vote to represent all 440 monuments that entered the competition:

1 – Amazon – Brazil (and 8 more countries)

With 5.5 million km² and the greatest biodiversity on the planet, the first wonder extends across nine countries in South America. Passing through Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, the Amazon rainforest and the Amazon River are considered as the first of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Despite occupying all these countries, it is worth noting that most of this forest is in Brazilian territory.

The forest has a perfect ecosystem, where a single tree can house more than 1,500 types of invertebrates, such as ants, spiders and beetles. One of the highlights of this natural monument is the meeting of waters between the Rio Negro and the Rio Solimões, which is famous all over the world and visited daily.

2 – Halong Bay – Vietnam

With an extension of about 1,500 km, this natural monument is located in the province of Quang Ninh, and has more than three thousand islands. Some hide beaches, caves and caves, as well as small floating fishing villages. In the waters, there are about 200 species of fish and more than 450 molluscs. The site is not only one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For travelers, the best way to get to Halong Bay safely and calmly is from the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi. It takes 3 hours by car, but you can also visit the region by ship.

The period between September and May is the ideal time to visit the place. These are times when the volume of rain is lower, making it possible to walk on the trails and visit the tourist attractions in a safer way. December, January and February are considered the high season months. For those looking to save money, many cruises offer offers during the rainy season, and the discount can reach 40% compared to other times of the year.

3 – Iguazu Falls – Brazil and Argentina

Another Brazilian representative among the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. The Falls are a set of 275 waterfalls located between the Iguacu National Park, in Brazil, and the Iguazú National Park, in Argentina. They occupy a total area of 250 thousand hectares of forest. Both became World Heritage Sites in 1984 and 1986, respectively.

You can visit the falls from both sides of the border. Both offer tourists a whole infrastructure such as walkways, viewpoints, snack bars, restaurants, restrooms and shops. In addition to the waterfalls, you will find a large green area with unique flora and fauna. This is because the Iguaçu National Park is one of the last Atlantic Forest reserves in the country – with its 185 thousand hectares on the Brazilian side and another 65 thousand hectares on the Argentine side. If your trip takes place in high season or on holidays, ideally you already have your ticket – to avoid wasting time at the beginning of the tour.

The panoramic bus route has three stops: the Macuco Safari – a trail in the middle of the jungle to a tram that will take you to the pier on the Iguaçu River, where you will depart in one of the twin-engine boats for a spectacular view and a bath in the Falls. then the stop Waterfalls Trail, where the Hotel das Cataratas is located – here the guides suggest that visitors go down to start the trail. And, finally, the third stop, where the snack bars, restaurant and access to the panoramic elevator are located, called Porto Canoas Space.

4 – Jeju Islands – South Korea

South Korea is not just about music and technology. The country also has its natural wonders – Jeju is a volcanic island with an area of 1,800 km² in the Korean Strait. Like other wonders already mentioned, Jeju is a World Heritage Site. There is also Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea and a dormant volcano, which is 1,900 meters above sea level.

Spring and autumn are the best times of the year to take this trip. You will find mild temperatures and tourist spots with few visitors. In summer, the place, besides being crowded, is usually very hot and rainy. In winter, temperatures are close to 10ºC during the day and almost 0ºC at night.

Jeju Island has activities for everyone to enjoy. If you want a long trip, you will have many places to visit, on the other hand, if you are traveling on a tighter schedule, be sure to visit the island. Consider at least one night's sleep in Jeju – having two or three full days is ideal for discovering the most famous and interesting places in the region.

5 – Table Mountain – South Africa

Table Mountain sits at the northern end of a sandstone ridge that forms the backbone of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. The mountain's summit has six million-year-old erosion residues and the site has 1,400 species of flowers and many rare species of wildlife.

The mountain, which is a true natural wonder, attracts thousands of adventurers to its top daily. It is the scene of several extreme sports, such as: mountain bike, hang gliding, surfing and diving. All this in addition to the cable car for those who want to climb the mountain but do not get along very well with this type of sport.

The best time of day to visit the place is before 10 am or in the late afternoon, when the wind is usually less intense. The best time of year is from November to February. At this time it is more likely to have cloudless days to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the place. Avoid the months of July and August. That's when the cable car closes annually for maintenance – usually for two weeks. During this period it is possible to go up on foot, but the facilities (restaurant and restrooms) will also be closed.

6 – Komodo National Park – Indonesia

Komodo National Park is made up of three large islands: Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as several smaller islands. With a total surface of 1,800 km², of which 603 km² are terrestrial, the National Park was founded in 1980, with the aim of protecting and saving the famous Komodo dragon, the flora and the marine fauna. But this trip is not just about meeting the animal that gives the park its name. In addition, you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, including beaches with pink sand.

The park is a 50-minute flight from Bali. Another option, a little more expensive, with stops on other islands along the way and a different proposal, is to go by ship. Upon arriving on the Island, in addition to meeting the Komodo dragon, you cannot miss the sunset, to witness thousands of bats flying in the region. In addition to diving with turtles, stingrays and corals.

The time to visit the park varies between three and seven days. It all depends on the tours you are going to take. Staying on the three main islands of Komodo National Park is extremely difficult. Therefore, it is on the neighboring island, Flores, that the largest amount of accommodation is concentrated, more precisely in the city of Labuan Bajo.

7 – Underground River of Porto Princesa – Philippines

With caves and caves, the Porto Princesa National Park has a navigable river that passes between rock formations. You can swim in these waters and admire the stalactites and stalagmites that sprout in the caves. All this and much more make the place one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World.

At the entrance of the river there is a lagoon with clear water and around its banks grow old trees where monkeys and bats find their ideal habitat. A group of environmentalists and geologists discovered in 2010 that the underground river has a “second floor”. That is, there are waterfalls inside the cave. They also found more channels and another deep cave, as well as sea creatures, among other news.

Now that you know what all the natural wonders are, you can organize a trip to see them all at once. What do you think?
