Discover the collection of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro and understand what was lost in one of the greatest tragedies in Brazilian history
Recently, Brazilian history was marked by a great national tragedy, which moved and outraged thousands of Brazilians. THE National museum, located in Rio de Janeiro, is the oldest historical institution in Brazil, founded in 1818 by Dom João VI, guarding extremely important treasures about the native peoples of the Americas.
The tragedy has definitely become a symbol of the great devaluation of national museums and cultural centers. According to survey of BBC, the case of the National Museum is not an isolated fatality. In the last 10 years alone, eight buildings that housed the country's cultural and scientific treasures had catastrophic endings, decimated by fire.
Weeks after the fire, some important pieces have already begun to be recovered in the excavations and are being cataloged again. The search continues without an end date, going on for a few more months. Employees, professionals and collaborators are also gathering photographs, videos and images that can show more details of the museum, allowing a better recognition of each rescued piece and measuring the great damage caused by the destruction of these patrimonies. In a press release, the organization appeals to everyone to send images of personal files to the e-mail: [email protected]
National Museum collection
More of 20 million of items were kept in the museum, which brought together different collections of the most varied subjects such as zoology, geology, paleontology, botany and archeology. Few people know, but in addition to the fossils of dinosaurs that lived 80 million years ago, the museum also housed the largest collection of Egyptian mummies in the Americas, the Angra meteorite, valued at R$ 3 million, as well as Luzia, the oldest human fossil. of the country, 12 thousand years old, found in Minas Gerais in 1975.
The tragedy marked an irreparable loss for the history of Brazil and humanity, leaving a great void in our trajectory, harming more than a century of work, research and study. Before the fire, the photographer Alexandre Macieira, represented by RioTur – Municipal Tourism Company of Rio de Janeiro, visited the building and registered the installations of the National Museum, prehistoric pieces, fossils and exhibitions.
